Foundations of Backyard Homesteading

This unit establishes foundational knowledge and practical skills for siting, planning, and preparing a productive backyard homestead. Students will learn garden and small‑livestock layout, soil and water management, basic preservation methods, and introductory apiculture and small‑animal care to prepare for production and processing units that follow.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze site, microclimate, water access, legal/regulatory constraints, and household needs to determine optimal homestead locations and calculate appropriate garden and animal area and layout (including trellis and cold frame placement).
• Design a seasonal planting plan by selecting vegetable varieties, deciding between seeds and transplants, timing plantings, and estimating quantities needed to meet household production goals.
• Apply soil assessment and improvement practices and integrated weed/pest management strategies by performing basic soil tests, recommending amendments, implementing composting, mulching, watering schedules, and encouraging beneficial insects.
• Demonstrate and evaluate foundational preservation and small‑scale husbandry practices by setting up basic water‑bath canning, freezing, drying, and cold storage methods, identifying low‑acid food concerns, and describing basic housing, feeding, and biosecurity for backyard chickens, rabbits, and bees.
