Foundations of Epidemiology

This unit introduces core concepts, history, and methods of epidemiology, grounding students in descriptive approaches, disease models, transmission dynamics, and prevention strategies. It prepares learners for more advanced analytic study and applied field investigations in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze historical and contemporary case studies (e.g., Hippocrates, John Snow, James Lind, miasma theory) to identify foundational concepts and their influence on modern epidemiologic practice
• Apply descriptive epidemiology methods and basic calculations to characterize health events by person, place, and time, including demographic patterns and the epidemiologic transition
• Demonstrate understanding of modes of transmission, the chain of infection, immunity, acute and chronic disease models, and primary prevention strategies through classroom activities and an epidemic investigation exercise
• Evaluate sources of bias, ethical considerations, and limitations in epidemiologic studies and propose strategies for minimizing bias and protecting participants in surveillance and research
