Foundations of Musical Theatre

This introductory unit establishes core knowledge of musical theatre history, genres, and the primary creative and production roles that bring a show to life. Students will explore theatre spaces, basic performer skills, and production processes to prepare for more applied performance and technical units that follow.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the historical development and types of musicals (including early works such as Show Boat) by sequencing key milestones and explaining how they shaped the modern musical theatre form
• Demonstrate understanding of the components and structure of a staged musical (overture, acts, intermission, leads/featured roles) by sequencing and explaining their functions in written or oral formats
• Apply casting, rehearsal, and basic performance concepts by preparing and presenting a short song or monologue excerpt and participating in a mock casting/rehearsal activity
• Evaluate the roles and responsibilities of the creative and production team (composer, librettist, casting director, costume designer, backstage crew) and local theatre resources by researching and presenting examples from a community or professional company
