This unit develops score-reading skills and deepens understanding of harmony, rhythm, and musical form through analysis of full and miniature scores, chord progressions, and contrapuntal examples. Students study intervals, triads, voicings, extended chords, meter and note values, and historical compositional techniques to apply theory to real scores and lead-sheet contexts.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze full and miniature scores to identify instrumentation, key signatures, voicings, phrase structure, and larger formal sections
- Apply interval, triad, inversion, and extended-chord knowledge to realize, notate, and voice chord progressions in lead sheets, fake books, and basic four-part textures
- Demonstrate rhythmic proficiency and ensemble preparation by interpreting asymmetrical meters and varied note values (half/minim, quarter/crotchet) and conducting basic patterns for rehearsal
- Evaluate contrapuntal and historical techniques by analyzing examples of fugue, twelve-tone writing, and historical score excerpts and relating stylistic features to composers and periods
