Iconic Architecture & Innovations

This capstone unit examines landmark buildings, influential architects, and the technological and social forces that shaped architectural evolution from antiquity through contemporary skyscrapers. Students analyze case studies and historical controversies to synthesize design lessons, assess structural systems, and prepare for advanced study or career pathways in architecture.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze major architectural works and architects from ancient, medieval, renaissance, modern, and contemporary periods (e.g., Parthenon, Pantheon, Chartres, Villa Savoye, Seagram Building, Petronas Towers) to identify stylistic characteristics, cultural context, and design intent
• Evaluate structural systems and technological innovations (e.g., vaulting, dome construction, steel frame, tube structures, seismic design) used in selected buildings and explain their impact on form, function, and building performance
• Apply professional reasoning to case-study scenarios involving preservation, disaster response, ethics, and intellectual property (e.g., building collapses, earthquakes, design controversies) to propose informed design, policy, or mitigation strategies
• Demonstrate the ability to synthesize historical precedents and lessons from iconic projects into conceptual design decisions that consider site context, materials, structural systems, and social implications
