Managing the First-Year Classroom

This unit prepares first-year teachers to manage day-to-day classroom routines, relationships, and professional responsibilities that support a safe, equitable learning environment. Students will practice behavior management, parent and staff communication, referral procedures, and self‑care/professional growth strategies to sustain effectiveness across the school year.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze common first-week and ongoing classroom priorities and produce a 30-day action plan that maps key locations, routines, collaborative spaces, and daily procedures for classroom operations.
• Apply evidence-based behavior management and conflict-resolution strategies by designing intervention plans, scripted responses for common misconduct, and criteria for when to escalate to counseling or administrative referral.
• Demonstrate professional communication and boundary-setting by role-playing parent conferences and staff interactions, and by creating a protocol for managing personal online presence and responding to students’ use of social media.
• Evaluate personal and professional development needs and create a concise professional growth and self-care plan that addresses observation preparation, coping with the daily grind, appropriate professional dress, and establishment of a safe space for students.
