Medical School Application and Interviewing

This unit guides students through selecting appropriate medical schools, preparing competitive primary and secondary applications, securing strong letters of recommendation, and developing interview skills. Students will also learn how to interpret admission decisions and create responsive plans for acceptances, waitlists, or reapplication.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze institutional and programmatic factors (e.g., mission, curriculum, clinical opportunities, competitiveness, geographic and financial considerations) to create a prioritized list of medical schools aligned with personal and professional goals
• Apply strategic writing and documentation techniques to produce a complete and polished primary application and supporting materials (including a personal statement, activity descriptions, and TMDSAS/AMCAS entries) that conform to application requirements and best practices
• Evaluate potential letter of recommendation writers and implement a management plan to obtain timely, compelling letters and to complete secondary applications that address school-specific prompts
• Demonstrate professional interview skills through mock interviews and feedback, including verbal responses to common questions, nonverbal communication, ethical and situational reasoning, and the ability to analyze admission offers (accept, decline, waitlist, or plan reapplication) to formulate next-step strategies
