This unit introduces foundational concepts for PCs and laptops, including core hardware components, safe assembly/disassembly, peripheral connections, basic networking, and essential system maintenance tasks. Students will practice hands‑on assembly, initial system setup, and perform basic security and backup procedures to prepare for more advanced diagnostics and repair units.
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate safe handling, electrostatic discharge (ESD) prevention, and proper power on/off procedures while performing basic service on desktop and laptop computers
- Assemble and configure a basic desktop PC and complete laptop setup by installing RAM and mass storage, connecting power and display devices, and successfully booting to firmware or operating system
- Apply knowledge of internal components and common interfaces (USB, keyboard, display, storage) to install, recognize, and troubleshoot peripheral connections and verify basic wired and wireless network connectivity
- Evaluate basic system protection and maintenance tasks by using Windows Security Center, implementing data backup strategies, explaining firewall and privacy concepts, and describing safe battery, power brick, and transport practices
