Preparing to Live and Work Abroad

This unit prepares learners to transition from planning to action by building practical skills for day-to-day digital nomad life: budgeting and taxes, housing and location selection, health and safety, communication, and work sourcing. Students will synthesize country-specific information, tools, and personal strategies to produce departure-ready plans and short-term career goals that support successful remote living abroad.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze personal finances and create a departure-ready budget that accounts for income sources, switching costs, taxes at home and abroad, emergency savings, and common budgeting errors
• Evaluate housing and location options by comparing search strategies, regional factors, and country spotlights (e.g., Bulgaria, Belize) to produce a prioritized destination and housing shortlist
• Demonstrate preparation and wellness strategies by developing a comprehensive pre-departure checklist addressing physical and mental health, safety and security, cross-border communication, travel apps, and contingency/exit plans
• Apply professional networking and work-planning skills to identify reliable income opportunities via online platforms, assess solo versus group work dynamics, craft cultural adaptation approaches, and set measurable 6–12 month career and personal goals
