Professional Screenwriting and Career Strategies

This capstone unit consolidates craft, business, and career practices for emerging screenwriters, focusing on final draft construction, rewriting, professional formatting, pitching, festival strategy, and ethical/career decision-making. Students study exemplar practitioners, prepare festival- and industry-ready materials, and develop a plan for ongoing career management and opportunities.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the techniques and career choices of featured screenwriters (e.g., Spike Lee, Jordan Peele, Taika Waititi, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Issa Rae, John Logan) and identify at least three strategies to incorporate into personal practice
• Apply industry-standard screenplay formatting and synopsis-writing conventions to produce a festival-ready short film script and a one-page synopsis
• Demonstrate effective pitching and networking skills by delivering a concise oral pitch and assembling a professional submission package for festivals or industry contacts
• Evaluate ethical, legal, and practical considerations (including adaptations, representation, and persistence strategies) and create a written personal career plan outlining festival targets, revision schedule, and next-step goals
