Spatial Data Analysis and Management

This unit develops core skills for acquiring, managing, and analyzing spatial data across raster and vector formats and introduces automation and deployment options. Students will work with tables and databases, perform surface and overlay analyses, apply map algebra and geocoding, and evaluate GIS tools and workflows to prepare for advanced, domain-specific applications.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and manage spatial datasets by creating and querying tables, importing and geocoding data, and selecting appropriate data sources for specific mapping and analysis tasks
• Apply raster and surface analysis techniques — including raster searches, map algebra, DEM processing, watershed delineation, impedance modeling, and relative measurements — to solve real-world spatial problems
• Demonstrate vector analysis and cartographic preparation skills by performing advanced overlay operations, locating map features, quantifying spatial patterns, and defining map contents for clear communication
• Evaluate and implement GIS tools and workflows by comparing database models (relational, object-oriented, NoSQL), using scripting to automate tasks, and assessing platform options (QGIS, ArcGIS Online, 3D/AR) for organizational deployment
