Architectural History and Innovation

This unit surveys major architectural styles and technological shifts from Byzantine and medieval churches through Renaissance, Baroque, modernism, and non‑Western traditions (Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Islamic), and traces the material and structural innovations that enabled skyscrapers and contemporary forms. Students will examine stylistic vocabulary, construction methods, and cultural context to prepare for subsequent units emphasizing applied design and technical documentation.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze defining formal, material, and symbolic characteristics of major Western and non‑Western architectural movements from Byzantine through the Mughal period.
• Compare and evaluate key structural and material innovations (e.g., vaulting, buttressing, iron and steel framing, reinforced concrete) and their effects on scale, program, and urban skyline development.
• Apply historical principles of proportion, ornamentation, and structural expression to produce annotated sketches or diagrams that reference at least two distinct historical styles.
• Evaluate the cultural influences and design considerations of Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and Islamic architectures and articulate how those influences inform culturally responsive design choices in contemporary practice.
