BIM Standards and Implementation

This unit develops students’ ability to interpret and apply BIM standards, coordination practices, and implementation strategies to real-world building projects. Building on foundational modeling skills, students will prepare BIM execution plans, evaluate collaboration and training approaches, and address specification, safety, and IoT integration to ready organizations for full BIM adoption and for subsequent advanced technical workflows.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze international and key BIM standards and object classification rules to determine compliance and information requirements for a given project
• Apply components of a BIM Execution Plan (BEP) to combine discipline information, select tools, define information-exchange protocols, and produce a BEP outline for a mid-sized building project
• Demonstrate model coordination and collaboration workflows—using specified exchange formats and coordination procedures—and implement BIM-based health and safety measures to reduce on-site risks
• Evaluate organizational adoption strategies, including training, change management, specification tools, trade event engagement, and IoT integration, and produce an implementation roadmap to support ongoing standardization and business objectives
