Foundations of Building Information Modeling

This unit introduces fundamental BIM concepts, terminology, and the relationships among building, information, and modeling. Students learn about BIM objects, open standards, collaboration and maturity models, basic authoring tools, and the organizational and technological factors that influence BIM adoption to prepare for project-level BIM practice.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze core BIM concepts, terminology, and components (building, information, modeling) and distinguish BIM from traditional CAD through written explanations and class discussions
• Demonstrate identification and appropriate use of common BIM objects, open standards, and basic authoring platforms by completing guided lab exercises and file/standards recognition tasks
• Apply collaboration models, levels of BIM maturity, and contractor-led team practices to develop a concise BIM execution strategy and project checklist for a sample project
• Evaluate organizational and technological readiness, including social and change-management factors, and recommend prioritized steps for initial BIM adoption within a small team or business
