Self-Build Planning and Foundations

This unit introduces foundational knowledge for self-build and renovation projects, covering site selection, budgeting, legal/approval processes, basic design principles, and primary construction elements and systems. Learners will prepare preliminary plans, cost estimates, and procurement strategies while becoming familiar with core materials, techniques, and construction management concepts necessary for subsequent, more detailed units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze project budgets, funding options, and cost drivers to develop a preliminary cost estimate and realistic financing plan for a self-build or renovation project
• Evaluate potential building sites and legal/approval requirements (including conveyancing and planning permission) to determine site suitability and identify required permits and risk factors
• Apply basic design principles and construction management practices to produce a preliminary project scope, schedule, and procurement strategy that aligns aesthetics, function, and regulatory constraints
• Demonstrate knowledge of fundamental building systems and components (foundations, drainage/sewage, masonry, roofing, windows, doors, water supply, and basic electrical considerations) by selecting appropriate materials and construction approaches for typical self-build scenarios
