BIM Implementation & Information Management

This unit develops students’ understanding of BIM as an information-driven process and prepares them to plan and manage BIM implementation across projects. Students will examine organizational change, legal and business considerations, model structuring, interoperability, collaboration workflows, and analysis tools through applied exercises and project-based planning.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the principles of BIM as an information-centric process and produce a written assessment of organizational impacts, stakeholder roles, and barriers to adoption.
• Develop a practical BIM implementation plan that includes a business case, legal considerations, on-site requirements, and champion strategies, and apply the plan in a simulated project scenario.
• Demonstrate proficiency in structuring and managing model information by creating parametric elements, sourcing object libraries and IFC-compliant exchanges, federating models, and maintaining model metadata in a hands-on exercise.
• Evaluate collaboration workflows, BIM analysis tools, and data-communication methods and produce a defined set of project BIM requirements that align stakeholder needs with pathway standards.
