This unit develops practical microphone knowledge and multitrack tracking skills for the home studio. Students learn to choose and place microphones, prepare sources for optimal capture, apply common miking techniques for instruments and voices, and run a basic multitrack recording session to produce organized takes for later editing and mixing.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze the characteristics (transducer type, polar pattern, frequency response, sensitivity, and connectivity) of common microphones and determine appropriate choices for a variety of home-studio sources.
- Apply source-preparation and microphone-selection strategies, including gain staging, to capture high-quality recorded sounds for at least four instrument or vocal types without clipping or excessive noise.
- Demonstrate at least three microphone placement and stereo/multi-mic techniques (e.g., close, ambient, XY, ORTF, spaced pair) by implementing miking setups for common instruments such as acoustic guitar, vocals, electric guitar amp, and a basic drum/snare configuration.
- Evaluate and implement a multitrack recording workflow by creating and naming tracks, assigning inputs/routing, arming and recording takes, and documenting session notes to produce organized material ready for editing and mixing.
