This unit introduces students to the art and craft of playwriting, exploring the professional life of a playwright, the essential elements that define a play, methods for generating ideas, and strategies for identifying a play’s central theme. Students will develop initial writing habits, analyze short plays, and prepare focused concept work that will support subsequent drafting and structure units.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze exemplar short plays to identify and annotate core dramatic elements—character, conflict, dialogue, setting, structure, and theme—in at least two texts.
- Apply professional habits of playwrights by creating and following a personal writing plan, maintaining a writer’s notebook with at least five idea entries and one draft scene, and participating in two peer feedback sessions.
- Demonstrate understanding of what makes a play by producing a one- to two-page scene outline that establishes a protagonist, objective, conflict, stakes, and dramatic action.
- Evaluate and refine an original play concept by articulating a central theme in a 250–500 word concept statement and mapping how proposed characters and conflicts will reveal that theme.
