Advanced Image Processing and Change Detection

This unit covers advanced radiometric and spatial image enhancement, multi-temporal and SAR-based change detection, and 3D data generation workflows, together with the data architecture and standards needed for interoperable GIS/remote sensing applications. Students will apply enhancement and coherence techniques, extract surface parameters for hazard and resource analysis, and prepare geospatial datasets for integration and internet dissemination.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and compare radiometric and spatial image enhancement methods (histogram equalization/matching, Gaussian stretch, high-pass and local filters, decorrelation stretch, RGB‑IHS transforms) and quantify their effects on feature discrimination and classification accuracy.
• Apply multi-temporal and SAR coherence change-detection techniques (ratio, spatial de-correlation, ratio coherence, multi-temporal coherence) to identify land-surface change and ground deformation and interpret results for risk and hazard assessment.
• Demonstrate very-narrow-baseline stereo matching and 3D data generation workflows to extract surface parameters and derive weighting coefficients used in geohazard and terrain analyses.
• Evaluate geospatial standards, metadata practices, coordinate system selection, and fundamental data structures (raster and vector) and implement interoperable map-algebra and internet/GIS dissemination workflows.
