This unit introduces foundational generative ideation methods and techniques for architectural and interior design, including combinatorial approaches, analogy-based thinking, and structured exercises. Students will learn to partner with generative AI to produce, critique, and pitch novel design concepts, preparing them to move into synthesis and prototyping in subsequent units.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze at least five ideation techniques (Generic Parts, Exquisite Corpse, Twists/Qualifiers, Combinational methods, and Analogy/Blending) and compare their strengths and limitations for solving architectural/interior design challenges
- Apply combinatorial and analogical strategies to produce and document a portfolio of at least ten distinct conceptual prompts or thumbnail sketches that explore diverse design solutions
- Demonstrate effective partnership with generative AI by creating, iterating, and critically evaluating AI-generated design variations, including recorded prompt revisions and assessment against defined design criteria
- Evaluate and present a selected AI-assisted concept in a concise startup-style pitch that articulates value proposition, novelty, assumptions, and next design steps
