Drone Fundamentals and Safety

This unit introduces foundational knowledge and practical skills for safe, responsible drone operation with a focus on camera use, basic maintenance, and regulatory and privacy considerations. Students will learn pre- and post-flight procedures, how to choose equipment and flight locations, and how to begin capturing and managing imagery for agricultural GIS purposes, preparing them for advanced mapping and data-analysis units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze common drone types, components, and integrated camera capabilities to determine suitability for agricultural geographic information tasks.
• Demonstrate proper pre‑flight and post‑flight procedures, propeller safety techniques, and location selection by completing and following a standardized checklist in a simulated or supervised field setting.
• Apply U.S. airspace rules, registration requirements, and commercial versus personal use distinctions, and evaluate privacy considerations to develop compliant flight plans and documentation.
• Evaluate basic imaging techniques (lighting, stabilization, camera settings, and media import) and create a concise flight log and media workflow that supports downstream GIS data collection.
