This unit develops practical skills in daily goat care, health maintenance, and basic reproductive management. Students will practice shelter design, nutritional assessment, routine husbandry tasks, disease recognition, and introductory breeding and marketing decisions to prepare for advanced production topics.
Learning Objectives
- Analyze housing and shelter needs and design a safe, weather-appropriate bunk or outdoor shelter that incorporates animal welfare and biosecurity considerations
- Apply body-condition scoring and feeding adjustments to create ration plans for maintenance, breeding, lactation, kidding, and special-case goats and troubleshoot common feed-related problems
- Demonstrate routine husbandry and health-care procedures including hoof care, basic first-aid, hand-milking, horn management, basic training techniques, and proper collaboration with a veterinarian
- Evaluate signs of health and disease, reproductive behaviors and kidding protocols, and make informed decisions for selecting, sourcing, breeding (including solutions when only does are available), showing, and marketing goats and goat products
