Foundations of Agile Project Management

This unit introduces core Agile concepts, values, and common approaches (Lean, Scrum, XP) and applies them to the early practices of project work: customer discovery, backlog refinement, sprint planning, daily scrums, and sprint review. Students will learn how Agile changes scope, time, quality, team dynamics, and organizational change and will prepare the team and physical environment needed for succeeding Agile delivery.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the Agile Manifesto (four values and twelve principles) and compare it to traditional project management approaches by identifying at least four key differences and explaining their expected impact on project outcomes
• Apply Lean, Scrum, and Extreme Programming techniques to elicit customer needs, write and refine user stories, size backlog items, and produce an adaptive sprint plan for a simulated sprint
• Demonstrate how to establish an Agile team environment by designing a low‑tech visual workspace, assigning team accountabilities (e.g., Product Owner, Scrum Master, Development Team), and conducting a mock Daily Scrum and Sprint Review
• Evaluate differences in Agile scope, time, quality, portfolio, and team dynamics versus historical approaches and develop a brief change-management action plan to increase organizational agility
