Foundations of AI Prompting

This unit introduces foundational knowledge and practical skills for creating effective AI prompts across text, image, audio, and conversational interfaces. Students will learn to select and manage AI tools and accounts, apply prompt-design techniques, and evaluate ethical, legal, and risk considerations to prepare for applied prompt engineering and deployment in later units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze different types of AI models and text-generation techniques to determine appropriate tools and output expectations for common business communication tasks
• Apply prompt-design principles to create, test, and refine prompts that generate usable text, image, and audio content while managing accounts and usage limits
• Demonstrate knowledge of ethical, legal, and risk considerations (including terms of service, data privacy, and tasks AI cannot replace) by evaluating scenarios and recommending safe usage practices
• Evaluate business use cases—such as customer service chatbots, personal branding, competitive research, and UX/UI considerations—and propose an initial implementation plan that leverages AI prompts and identifies upskilling needs
