This unit introduces foundational knowledge and practical considerations for beginning beef cattle enterprises. Students will examine the rewards and responsibilities of ownership, learn cattle terminology and anatomy, compare breeds and traits, and plan basic facilities and feeding programs to prepare for hands-on management and health units.

- demonstrate knowledge of cattle terminology and anatomy by identifying and labeling major external parts and key internal systems used in beef cattle management in written and practical assessments
- evaluate common beef cattle breeds and production traits to recommend suitable breeds for specified production goals and Texas environmental conditions
- apply principles of facility design and nutrition to develop a basic herd management plan that includes a facility layout, biosecurity considerations, and a feeding program for a defined herd size
