Foundations of Hyperintelligence

This unit introduces the deep-history and systems-level foundations of hyperintelligence, tracing the emergence of complexity from protocells through cultural and technological revolutions and surveying enabling technologies (AI, biotech, quantum, energy). Students will examine ethical dual-use dilemmas and learn to translate scientific and historical insights into strategic business implications, preparing them for advanced pathway units on governance, deployment, and policy.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze ethical dual-use dilemmas and construct case-based frameworks that assess benefits, risks, and stakeholder responsibilities for emerging AI and biotechnologies in business contexts
• Evaluate the processes of increasing complexity and intelligence—from chemical tokens and protocells to empires and technological singularities—and map their implications to organizational structure, innovation cycles, and market dynamics
• Apply knowledge of enabling technologies (multimodal physical AI, sequencing/barcoding, gene machines, quantum advances, and the emerging hydrogen economy) to develop strategic responses addressing resource constraints, regulatory change, and opportunities for competitive advantage
• Demonstrate the ability to generate and communicate plausible near-term scenarios (including runaway intelligence, end-of-scarcity outcomes, bureaucratic collapse, and self-organization events) and recommend adaptive management strategies for enterprises
