This unit introduces the historical, technological, and business foundations of spatial computing and its convergence with AI, AR/VR, sensing, and UX revolutions. Students will explore milestone technologies, real-world use cases, beneficiaries, risks, and the leadership and strategic planning considerations required to begin integrating spatial computing into organizations.

Learning Objectives

Analyze the historical evolution of visual and spatial technologies from early photography and film through television, VR/AR, and contemporary spatial computing by identifying and explaining at least five milestone developments and their significance.
Demonstrate understanding of core concepts by defining spatial computing and related AI, sensing, and UX technologies, and by categorizing at least six real-world spatial use cases across different industries.
Evaluate the business implications and stakeholder benefits by comparing three organizational use cases, assessing potential value, barriers to adoption, and key beneficiaries in a written summary with supporting evidence.
Apply strategic planning principles to create a 1–2 page initial implementation checklist that identifies leadership actions, integration steps, and top risks and ethical considerations for piloting spatial computing in a business context.
