Foundations of the Constitution

This unit introduces students to the origins, structure, and core doctrines of the U.S. Constitution and provides a high-level framework for thinking about constitutional law. Students will trace the creation of the federal government, map key concepts and distinctions (federalism, separation of powers, supremacy), and assess the constitutional reach of national powers to prepare for deeper case-based study in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze the historical context, structure, and purposes of the U.S. Constitution by identifying and explaining the functions of its preamble, articles, and key amendments.
• Apply high-level distinctions between constitutional, statutory, and administrative law to classify real‑world examples and explain how each type of law operates within the U.S. legal system.
• Demonstrate comprehension of core constitutional concepts (separation of powers, checks and balances, federalism, supremacy) by producing diagrams or charts that map relationships and institutional roles.
• Evaluate the scope and limits of national government powers by interpreting enumerated powers, the Commerce Clause, and the Necessary and Proper Clause using historical and contemporary examples.
