Hobby Farm Foundations and Planning

This unit introduces learners to the essential considerations for transitioning to hobby farming, including personal goals, property selection, budgeting, community factors, land issues, structures, storage, and tools. Students will evaluate options and develop a preliminary plan that prepares them for hands-on site development and animal/plant management in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze personal lifestyle goals, community characteristics, and motivations to determine the suitability of hobby farming and to articulate a clear vision for a prospective farm
• Evaluate potential properties and sites by assessing acreage needs, location factors, existing accommodations, land-use and wildlife considerations, and legal/ownership issues
• Develop a preliminary budget and resource inventory that allocates costs for land acquisition or improvement, structures, utilities, storage, tools, and ongoing operational expenses
• Select and justify appropriate infrastructure, animal enclosures, storage solutions, and categories of tools and equipment (hand tools, powered tools, and towable machinery) consistent with the farm vision and safety/regulatory requirements
