Infusion Delivery and Fluid Management

This unit expands foundational IV knowledge to include fluid and electrolyte management, parenteral nutrition basics, accurate calculation of dosages and flow rates, and multiple methods of IV delivery. Students will also learn rigorous documentation practices and peripheral IV essentials to prepare for advanced infusion therapy competencies.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze patient scenarios to identify fluid and electrolyte imbalances and determine appropriate IV fluid or parenteral nutrition interventions based on clinical indicators
• Apply mathematical and pharmacologic principles to calculate medication dosages, infusion rates, drip rates, and pump settings for gravity, pump, and syringe deliveries with accuracy
• Demonstrate correct setup, operation, and troubleshooting of IV delivery systems including gravity sets, electronic infusion pumps, syringe pumps, and peripheral IV insertion/maintenance techniques
• Evaluate and document infusion therapy comprehensively, recording assessments, device and solution details, patient responses, and any complications in accordance with professional and legal requirements
