Scaling, Finance, and Innovation

This unit guides students through the decisions and practices required to scale an entrepreneurial venture, manage finances, and convert ideas into protected products and processes. Students will learn market entry and forecasting, product development and IP protection, financial planning and funding options, and governance and operational strategies that support growth and exit planning.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze market entry strategies and forecast demand using quantitative and qualitative techniques to inform feasibility and break-even planning
• Apply product-development processes—including market testing, lean-method feasibility analysis, rapid prototyping, and IP/trade-secret protections—to advance viable offerings
• Demonstrate preparation and interpretation of core financial statements, cash-flow and working-capital plans, and capital needs analyses that consider sources such as venture capital, S corporations/LLCs, and public offerings
• Evaluate organizational and operational choices—board formation, business entity selection, supply-chain considerations (including international), ESG practices, diversification, and exit/contingency plans—to support sustainable scaling
