System-Based Medical Terminology

This capstone unit integrates advanced, system-specific medical terminology focused on surgeries, procedures, diagnostic testing, pathology, and pharmacology across body systems. Students apply reference resources and mnemonic strategies to decode, construct, and communicate complex clinical terms in realistic health-care contexts.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze and interpret system-specific medical terms for surgeries, diagnostic tests, diseases, and pharmacologic treatments across musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous, endocrine, integumentary, gastrointestinal, urinary, and reproductive systems with at least 80% accuracy on applied assessments.
• Apply medical reference tools (dictionaries, study guides, and digital resources) and mnemonic strategies to decode, construct, and spell complex medical terminology and abbreviations in simulated clinical documents and case studies.
• Demonstrate correct use and differentiation of related anatomical and directional terms (e.g., perineal vs. peroneal), root words, and commonly confused terms through written explanations and oral reporting in classroom scenarios.
• Evaluate diagnostic reports, surgical summaries, and pharmacology notations to identify key terminology, interpret clinical implications, and compose clear, professional communications appropriate for health-care team interactions.
