Advanced Flight Operations & Imaging

This unit advances students from basic drone fundamentals to applied operational and imaging skills for agricultural GIS. Students learn to plan and conduct complex flights (night, airport, populated, and sub‑optimal weather), capture and stabilize high‑quality imagery, perform inspections and approvals, and evaluate platform and workflow tradeoffs in preparation for capstone applications.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze meteorological data, airspace classifications, NOTAMs, and site conditions to develop compliant flight plans for operations in sub‑optimal weather, at night, near airports, and over populated areas.
• Apply camera and flight‑control techniques—including frame rate selection, digital camera settings, heads‑free and FPV modes, and battery management—to capture stable, georeferenced imagery suitable for agricultural GIS analysis.
• Demonstrate systematic preflight inspections and complete required administrative procedures to obtain approvals, waivers, or experimental certification for public or specialized drone operations.
• Evaluate drone platforms, payloads, accessories, and post‑processing workflows (stabilization, picture/video editing, and data management) to recommend solutions that balance mission requirements, cost, and regulatory constraints for agricultural applications.
