Classroom Foundations and Professionalism

This unit introduces first-year teachers to foundational classroom management, professional responsibilities, and operational practices needed for a successful start in Texas schools. Students will practice creating lesson plans, behavior systems, recordkeeping routines, and communication strategies that prepare them for deeper instructional design and assessment work in subsequent units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze differences between school expectations and real-world contexts by comparing at least three scenarios and interpreting implications for classroom routines, first impressions, and professional boundaries.
• Apply classroom management and operational procedures—including behavior consequences, daily recordkeeping, health protocols, grading systems, and use of the digital learning platform—by producing sample behavior plans, record templates, and a grading rubric aligned to school policies.
• Demonstrate effective lesson planning and engagement techniques by creating two complete lesson plans that integrate games, pacing strategies, differentiation for varied academic levels, and aligned assessment methods.
• Evaluate professional relationships and communication strategies with administrators, front office staff, coworkers, and parents by drafting communication templates and a plan for maintaining professional competence, appropriate boundaries, and self-care.
