Foundations of Ancient Civilizations

This unit introduces students to the political, social, technological, and intellectual foundations of early civilizations, from the first fortified cities and riverine settlements to the rise of Rome and Greek democracy. Students will investigate how religion, myth, writing, engineering, and military innovation shaped societies and prepared them to build empires and institutions studied in later units.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze how agricultural surplus, river systems, fortifications, and trade contributed to the emergence of cities and early states, citing at least three case examples (e.g., Jericho, river-valley cities, Rome).
• Evaluate the roles of religion, myth, and emerging philosophical thought in organizing social order and political institutions by comparing primary literary and religious sources (e.g., Homeric epics, animist practices, early philosophy).
• Demonstrate the ability to interpret primary and material sources—such as inscriptions, monuments, the Rosetta Stone, and archaeological remains—to draw evidence-based conclusions about daily life, governance, and communication in ancient societies.
• Apply knowledge of military and technological innovations (e.g., fortifications, cavalry developments, army organization) to explain changes in warfare and their impacts on state power, territorial expansion, and institutional stability.
