System Integration and Pathophysiology

This unit synthesizes organ-system physiology and pathophysiology—covering respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous, urinary, skeletal, immune, and reproductive systems—while integrating biochemical principles (water, polarity, redox, fluids/electrolytes) and microbial interactions. Students apply clinical reasoning to interpret signs, diagnostic data, and treatment/management strategies to prepare for advanced health science coursework and clinical practice.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze clinical case data to identify pathophysiological changes across respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous, urinary, skeletal, immune, and reproductive systems and link those changes to observable signs, symptoms, and diagnostic findings
• Apply principles of water chemistry, polarity, redox reactions, and fluid/electrolyte balance to explain mechanisms underlying gas exchange, circulation, osmoregulation, acid–base balance, and neonatal first-breath adaptation
• Demonstrate mastery of immune system mechanisms by differentiating innate and adaptive responses, interpreting host–microbe interactions (including pregnancy-related immune modulation), and recommending evidence-based prevention and treatment strategies for common infectious and immune-mediated conditions
• Evaluate structure–function relationships of tissues, joints, muscles, and sensory systems (including olfaction and respiratory control), predict functional outcomes of common pathologies (e.g., appendicitis, hypertension, osteoporosis), and propose appropriate clinical interventions or patient education
