Sustainable Materials and Systems

This unit focuses on evaluating, selecting, and detailing green materials, finishes, and assemblies for residential construction and remodeling. Students will investigate alternative building methods, compare life-cycle and health impacts of products, and apply system-level strategies for energy and water efficiency while documenting compliance and manufacturer claims.

Learning Objectives

• Analyze site selection and green-building trade-offs (environmental impacts, lifecycle cost, and claimed economic benefits) to justify siting and design decisions for a residential project
• Evaluate and compare green materials and finishes (e.g., cob, cordwood, heavy timber, kirei board, eco resin, recycled countertops, floor finishes, steel framing) using life-cycle criteria, VOC/health metrics, durability, maintenance, and manufacturer claims
• Apply sustainable installation and system strategies (pipe/attic/water-heater insulation, modified concrete mixes, water‑treatment options, clothesline/solar-drying, and appropriate assemblies) to improve energy efficiency, water use, and indoor environmental quality in a remodel scenario
• Demonstrate the ability to interpret codes and specifications, select low-toxicity finishes, and compile a materials specification and documentation package that verifies performance claims and regulatory compliance
